Slick roads? Get a grip on tire safety

Insurance agents talk a lot about the weather. When something influences many of the claims we see, often causing those claims outright, we have to become experts in that risk.

It doesn’t take a degree in meteorology to notice that the weather has continued to be anything but usual. Snowstorms, torrential rain, and even ice affect parts of the country that never see that kind of weather.

But what can you do? Well, check your tires.

Tires are one of the most important parts of automobile safety. They can help prevent accidents before they happen. But most of us forget about them until our mechanic shames us into action after changing the oil.

So try these easy steps to make sure your vehicle is on solid footing:

  • Check It—Inspect your tires regularly and always before driving long distances.
  • Rotate It—Schedule regular tire maintenance, including rotations, with your auto service technician.
  • Quarter It—Try the “quarter test.” Put a quarter head down into the groove of the tread. If you can see the top of Washington’s head, it may be time for new tires.
  • Inflate It—Tire pressure is a goldilocks situation; too much is bad, and too little is bad. Check your auto manual for your vehicle’s pressure recommendation and refill to that level regularly.

A great set of tires that are well taken care of can help you stay safe even in the worst weather.
